This short work is a meditation on the sound world of the songwriters of Southern California. I’ve always felt that in the realm of popular song, Los Angeles has had its own harmonic language that captures the dichotomy of sunlight and shadow that is so central to the mythos of L.A. I encourage the performer to search for grain and texture in the sound, emulating or channeling those singers, like Elliott Smith, whose voices are deeply expressive without being trained.
